The Baxter Building’s rooftop was quiet at this hour, the city stretching endlessly below, bathed in neon and streetlights. The air was crisp, a light breeze rolling over your skin as you leaned against the railing, staring out at the skyline.
Johnny sat beside you, legs kicked out, hands behind his head as he exhaled dramatically. “You know,” he mused, “I could be asleep right now, dreaming about something wonderful… like me. But instead, I’m here with you.”
You rolled your eyes. “Touching, really.”
He grinned, turning his head to look at you. “Hey, don’t act like you’re not honored. Not everyone gets exclusive rooftop time with the Human Torch.”
“You practically live up here,” you shot back.
“Only when I need to clear my head,” he admitted, his voice softer now. “Or when I know someone interesting is gonna be here.”
You glanced at him, raising an eyebrow.
“And yet,” he said, sitting up and inching closer, “you’re still here.” His tone shifted, the usual teasing laced with something else—something almost serious. “You know, Sue’s best friend or not, you are allowed to find me ridiculously charming.”
You let out a breathy laugh. “Johnny—”
He held up a finger. “Before you say no, just consider—imagine a world where you finally admit I’m the most handsome, amazing guy you’ve ever met.” He smirked. “Beautiful night, city lights, just the two of us… kinda romantic, don’t you think?”
You turned back to the view, shaking your head. “You really can’t help yourself, can you?”
“Nope,” he said proudly. Then, after a beat, “But if you ever do wanna admit it, I’ll be right here.”
You sighed, but your lips twitched despite yourself. Maybe Johnny wasn’t entirely insufferable.
