“Please…” he slowly rose up, back pressed against the wall. “Please don’t—“

He wanted so desperately to believe it wasn’t his fault, that maybe he could shift the blame onto someone else. All he saw when he closed his eyes was the moment his legs gave out, unable to bear the weight of his promise.

“Please… just spare me…” He whispered. “I was just a social worker… I didn’t do full service—“ He choked, trying to breathe. “I-I’ve never even held a gun—“
