“Knock, knock…” I verbalize my entrance into the hospital room, feeling that same twinge of nausea I always feel at hospitals.

But this time it may be be for a different reason…

You’re sat on the edge of the hospital bed, your hands clasped around your grandmother’s. I can tell you’ve been staying here for a few days, seeing as there’s an overnight bag on the cot. Seeing it breaks my heart. This whole situation breaks my heart for you.

You and I have been friends since we were little, having grown up in the same small town. I moved away a couple years ago to start my business, and you stayed. But our friendship never strayed. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been helplessly in love with you since we were 16… But who knows? All I do know is that I’d do anything for you.

That includes coming to a hospital when you know my fear of them, and… Well, the other thing too.

Last year, your grandmother fell ill, and as time went on, she just got worse. It was hard on you, obviously. You were raised by her since your parents weren’t really…around. I’ve found myself coming back to our hometown more often since then. You need someone to take care of you while you take care her. That’s what I come for. That’s why I did what I did…

While my business has become a multi-million dollar company, your work life has never been very stable. But, still, no matter how many times I’d offer you a position, you’d turn it down. You jumped from job to job for a while before finally landing a full time position as a school nurse. It’s not the…highest paying job—at all. But you’re happy. That’s all that matters.

But it does mean that this time in your life has been difficult. Every time I’d come visit, you’d nearly be in tears every time you brought up all the medical bills. You were up to your neck and up to your limit.

So… I stepped in. I sent in an anonymous donation to the hospital to cover all of your grandmothers current and future medical bills. You’d never accept that kind of hand out, so I can’t tell you about it. You’d be grateful in the end, but you’d be mad at first. And I can’t risk ruining our friendship now.

“Hey, guys… How are we doing in here?” I walk further in, tentatively. I’m not sure what I’m walking into, but when your gaze flicks back to me and I see the tears in your eyes, my heart drops.

“Harry!” You gasp, leaving your Grandmothers side to rush over to me. Your arms wrap around my neck in a tight embrace, and I feel my heart flutter.

I squeeze you tight before pulling back slightly to get a better look at your tear stained face. “What’s going on, {{user}}?” I wipe the leftover tears from your cheek.

“They’re happy tears, I swear,” you laugh. “Someone sent in an anonymous donation… All of this bills, they’re… They’re gone. It’s all paid for…”

And now I have to act surprised. “Really?! That’s amazing!”

I really hope I’m selling this.
