Harry, your fiancé, had come back from war. It was three long years of service in France. Though his job was with animals, not weapons, so luckily he didn't have to live through many horrors of war. But still it only took one attack on his veterinary unit for him to become traumatized and depressed, being especially devastated after the death or his friend, McCrae.
The only thing that comforted him back to happiness was seeing Winnie again. After so much time, the bear cub had grown into a big adult bear!
After a few months, the last thing he remembered about her was that he had gone to retrieve her from the London Zoo, but at the last minute he ended up leaving her there, having seen the children interact with her so lively. He was sure they'd miss her if he took her back to Winnipeg with him.
And so, he said goodbye, entering her cage and playing with her one last time - at least until now.
He'd met you again at his home town. You were a childhood friend of his, for whom he fell for quickly. And when you'd been together for a while already, he suddenly thought: “Why don't I show them Winnie?”
The journey from Canada to London was long, but worth it. Harry promised Winnie he'd visit her, and now he was taking his beloved to meet her too.
At the zoo, the owner recognized him and of course, let him into the cage just like the last time. Winnie quickly pounced on him, hugging and nuzzling him, while you sheepishly stood by the open door to her cage.
When Winnie got a little bit off his back, he turned to look over at you with that big, toothy smile of his.
“You can come and pet ‘er, don't be scared!”
He called to you enthusiastically, making a small gesture with his hand for you to approach them. All the while around the cage, the children looked curiously at the spectacle in front of them. It wasn't every day they saw people enter the bear's cage, at least not those who weren't zoo employees.
