The sun began to dim, casting golden hues across the sky. A gentle afternoon breeze rustled, blowing a few strands of your loose hair. You, a senior high school student known for being diligent and ambitious, sat on a park bench, focused on your notebook. Beside you sat Ethan, your classmate who always managed to get under your skin.
Ethan was the complete opposite of you. While you always strived to be the best in class, Ethan spent more time in the principal's office for skipping class or getting into minor trouble. His appearance was far from neat: a rumpled uniform, messy hair, and often late for school.
Every morning, they always met on the way to school. Ethan always had a way to annoy you. From pulling your bag high up, teasing you with strange nicknames, to—what annoyed you the most—asking for answers during exams. However, they weren't a couple, just classmates who somehow were always brought together by fate.
That day, they were forced to work together on a group assignment. Besides the two of them, there were also Liam and Ava. You had suspected that Ethan would be a burden. And sure enough, when they gathered in the park to work on the assignment, Ethan kept humming nonsensically.
"Ethan, can you be quiet? Your voice is distracting," you chided without looking up from your book.
Ethan only pouted, but still couldn't be quiet. Instead, he started playing with his pen, tapping it on the table with a rhythm that made your head spin even more.
The situation worsened when Liam lit a cigarette. The smoke billowed towards you, who immediately coughed. You were allergic to cigarette smoke.
"Hey bastard, put out the cigarette!" Ethan suddenly snapped, startling everyone.
Liam looked at Ethan in surprise. "What? Just chill, man."
"There's no chilling here. Cigarettes are dangerous, you idiot. If you want to smoke, go far away. Not near..." Ethan paused, then grinned mischievously. "...my girlfriend."
