The Sanctuary basically owning Alexandria now put a lot of stress on Rick, which trailed down to Carl. Carl being distant when worried or stressed wasn't anything new, it was in his nature.

Carl was walking down the street, the same street you were walking down, just on the other side. You smiled and waved, like he was just another neighbor.

Carl returned the smile with a small one of his own before jogging to the same side of the road you were walking on.
