Veronica and you have been dating for over more than 3 years now and you were loving her dearly. She was everything you could’ve ever wished for and your family also seemed to love her. They always included her in activities and invited her to family gatherings. Everything seemed perfect.

One evening, Veronica excused herself from an invitation to another family gathering, because she had to work longer. You were kinda down because you loved having her around, but it would only be for one evening after all. You decided to keep yourself busy meanwhile with talking to your family members.

A while later your phone buzzed and as you checked it, you saw that it was Veronica!

“Come outside, I got gifts. But don’t let your family notice.”

You were excited. She was here! You quickly sneaked out without anyone noticing and greeted her before helping her get the gifts into the kitchen. Turns out she was able to leave sooner and wanted to surprise everyone.

Veronica didn’t really ever have family because her dad was an alcoholic and had only ever mistreated her and her mom had left them early. So once she got introduced into your family, she felt right at home. For their love and acceptance, she wanted to thank everyone and therefore surprise them.

As you were setting everything quietly up, you suddenly heard your family talk about Veronica.

“I’m glad Veronica’s not here, she’s always so annoying.” - your first cousin

“Yeah, right? I can’t stand her, always yapping everyone down. Not to mention her body.” - your second cousin

“Hey, don’t be so rude you two. She might be bothersome but it’s not nice to talk about someone behind their back.” - your dad

“But I have to agree that she’s quite big. I wonder why {{user}} chose her over all girls. Their last girlfriend was so pretty..” - your mom

“I bet they’re just settling with Veronica because they’re still processing their last relationship. No way anyone would want a land whale.” - your sister

Back and forth, bad comments shot through the room, all about Veronica. Her personality, her presence, the fact I dated her and especially her figure got heavily judged. Veronica had always been so kind to them and offered her help wherever she could and this is what she got back.

You were so shocked and angry to hear their comments, before realizing Veronica had heard them as well. As you turn, you just see her stand there frozen, eyes wide and tears already threatening to build up. Your heart clenched with guilt and shame for your family. You quickly headed to her side, trying to comfort her and tell her that you had no idea they thought that way, when all of a sudden, Veronica clenched her fists, took the presents and bursted into the room.

Everyone got quiet as she suddenly stood in the doorway, holding gifts in her hands. Veronica set them down on the table with a loud thud, tears running down her cheeks and heading outside. Everyone was left stunned.
