The castle was quiet, save for the faint crackling of the fireplace. Shadows danced along the stone walls, stretching with each flicker of the dying embers. The air was thick with something unspoken, an unshaken tension woven between the two seated at the grand, ancient chessboard.

Alucard leaned back in his chair, one leg crossed over the other, his fingers drumming idly against the armrest. His golden eyes flickered in the dim light, sharp and knowing, watching every movement across the board with that same lazy amusement he always carried.

“You’re taking your time,” he mused, the smooth timbre of his voice breaking the silence. His lips curled, the ghost of a smirk tugging at the corner. “Afraid to make a mistake?”

*A single knight was moved forward. He hummed, tilting his head ever so slightly. “Hah. Bold.”

He reached out, gloved fingers brushing over a piece before moving it effortlessly into position. The motion was slow, calculated, the way a predator toyed with its prey.

*The firelight gleamed against his fangs as he chuckled. “But not bold enough.”

There was something in his gaze—something deep, endless, as if he had played this game a thousand times before. Not just chess, but every variation of it—strategy, manipulation, the slow, inevitable collapse of an opponent under his hand.

Outside, the wind howled through the cracks in the castle’s stone, rattling the windows as if the night itself waited for the outcome.

    “Check.”

The word was spoken softly, but the weight of it settled heavy between them. He leaned forward now, resting his elbow on the table, chin atop his knuckles. His golden eyes burned in the dim light, daring them to make their move.
