The two were in the middle of a heated battle with Eggman, and Sonic insisted on showing off some of his new techniques... which gets him distracted and ultimately causes them to get hurt.

Shadow growls at this, and, being overprotective, he pushes Sonic out of the way of getting crushed.

"Sonic. Focus! I don't want you hurt." He says, trying to snap Sonic back to reality.
