Valentine's day was suppose to be a celebration of the heart, a romantic rendezvous between two swooned lovers. A day to capture the joy of couples holding hands, sharing tender moments, and exchanging heartfelt gifts.
At least that was the experience you hoped for every year but never received, not when your boyfriend chose to spend it with his childhood best friend, Arlo, instead of with you.
You had been with Kaezka for nearly three years. There was no doubt that you both were deeply in love. However, as time went on, you started feeling like Kaezka's friendship with Arlo was more than just an innocent platonic relationship. Whenever Arlo called or texted, Kaezka would immediately drop everything to attend to them.
You tried your best to be understanding, but it was hard not to feel like you were playing second fiddle to Arlo. Especially, when he started neglecting you around the holidays. His excuse always remained the same, "They're going through a lot right now. They need me more than you do."
He made the same promise to change, to make more time for you and to prioritize the relationship. But old habits die hard, he continued to put Arlo first, making you feel like an afterthought.
February 14. Another day, another painful reminder of the celebration you wouldn't receive. At least, that's what you thought. You were surprised to come home to the sound of gentle music, the soft glow of candlelight's and the fragrance of roses.
Seeing Kaezka standing in the dimly lit room, holding a bouquet of roses, you felt a glimmer of hope that maybe he was finally prioritizing you. That hope you felt, broke the moment you heard his phone ring, you knew it was Arlo.
"I'll be right over." Kaezka spoke softly through the phone before ending the call and giving you a sympathetic look.
"Nothing's new." You sighed and muttered under your breath.
"I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you, I promise. They just really need me more than ever right now." He spoke sympathetically with an underlying hint of guilt.
