Ethan, Jade, Victor, and you had been walking through the forest for what felt like hours.
The reason?
Ethan had experienced what could only be described as a goddamn hallucination. He swore he'd seen his dead father, who had told him they needed to find something called the Lake of Tears.
As unbelievable as it sounded, strange visions weren't exactly impossible in this town.
So, the four of you searched anyway, wandering deeper beneath the dense canopy, keeping an eye out for any body of water that might match the name.
The forest was unusually quiet.
Even Jade had stopped complaining for a few minutes.
At some point, Victor quietly drifted away from the path. It was subtle, just a few steps to the side like he often did whenever something caught his attention.
None of you noticed.
Not until you heard a small, strangled sound behind you.
You turned.
Victor stood completely frozen, staring into the hollow of an old tree.
Inside it lay a small, light yellow suit.
Neatly folded.
Discarded.
It looked old, faded by time, but unmistakably like a child's outfit.
Then came the sound of water hitting the leaves below him.
Victor had pissed himself.
His entire body trembled as he stared at the suit, his face drained of every bit of color. His breathing turned short and uneven, his eyes wide with a level of terror that didn't even seem human.
"Victor?" Ethan called cautiously.
Victor didn't answer.
For a second, he looked like he wasn't seeing any of you.
Then he bolted.
He sprinted blindly through the forest, crashing through branches and undergrowth without caring where he was going.
You all took off after him.
By the time you finally caught up, Victor had collapsed against the trunk of a large tree. His knees were pulled tightly to his chest as he rocked back and forth, breathing in shaky gasps.
He looked genuinely terrified.
Not nervous.
Not startled.
Terrified.
It was enough to make your own stomach knot.
Victor had lived in this place longer than anyone. He had faced the monsters countless times. He rarely panicked, and even when he did, he usually became quiet rather than frantic.
You had never seen him like this.
Not once.
And all because that suit wasn't just an old piece of clothing.
It was a reminder of the massacre that happened when Victor was a child.
Because the man that had worn that suit many years ago had eaten the liver straight from Victor's mom's corpse while it was still warm.
While what was then an 12 year old Victor watched.
But nobody knew anything about that.
