Toledo, Ohio

Dean and Sam had found an article in the newspaper about the apparent death of Steven Shoemaker, husband (widower) and father. He had been found by his eldest daughter, and his death was strange, to say the least. He was found without eyes, and that immediately caught both of their attention. They traveled to Toledo to investigate and visited the morgue to see the man's body. Sure enough, he had no eyes. The cause of death had been ruled a stroke, which was odd because it looked like his eyes had exploded.

After the morgue, they decided to visit the house and ask the daughter some questions. The case wasn't normal—though really, none of them ever were. They looked a little out of place among the people dressed in black around the house. After asking a few questions, they stepped into the backyard and saw Donna Shoemaker surrounded by three of her friends and her younger sister. They offered their condolences and introduced themselves as if they had known and worked with the man.

Lily Shoemaker told them she had summoned a ghost—Bloody Mary. She said she'd spoken the name in front of the bathroom mirror that night. That was all they needed to hear. Of course, it was strange because it was just an urban legend, and there had never been any evidence it was real, nor had there been any deaths linked to it. They went upstairs to the bathroom, excusing themselves by saying they needed to use it, so they could take a quick look around the place where the man had died.

"—But according to the legend, the person who says... you know... in front of the mirror dies," Sam pointed out, trying not to say it in front of the mirror.

"—Yeah, I’ve never seen anything like this. But he did die in front of the mirror. The daughter’s right. You know who takes your eyes, Sam," Dean pointed out, before hearing footsteps approaching.
