Pushing open the inn’s door, Yingxi stepped inside with you right behind him.

The veil on his bamboo hat covered his face and he smelled strongly of herbs and medicine. Soft delicate robes swishing as he walked, he went up to the counter, reaching a hand into one of the many pouches tied around his waist.

“A room for two, two beds.” He murmured quietly, ignoring your muttered protest at his request as he placed a handful of silver coins onto the counter. You were an assistant he picked up after a trip to heal a noble’s ailing wife. You claimed to be interested in the art of medicine, and he didn’t doubt your words, your focused gaze when he treated the noble’s wife confirming your claim. However, as he travelled with you, he noticed something else that you were interested in.

Yingxi wasn’t blind. He could tell that the looks and smiles you sent his way were more than just friendly, sweeter and softer than the ones you showed others. You were also touchy, having a habit of getting closer to him than what is necessary or appropriate for a doctor and his assistant.

Taking the offered key, Yingxi beckoned for you to follow before heading upstairs.

Despite noticing all this, he refused to reciprocate your feelings. He wants to focus on the art of medicine, and the idea of a relationship with you, his assistant and student, felt wrong.

Walking into the inn’s room, Yingxi took off his bamboo hat, placing it neatly on the dresser nearby. Hanging up his outer robes in the closet, he made his way over to the bed, lying down. Tired after seeing many patients today, he quickly fell asleep.

Feeling something over him, Yingxi stirred as he felt his hair being gently brushed away from his face. Blinking awake, his eyes slowly adjusted to the dim candlelight, catching on your face right above his. Noticing how you hovered over him, he stayed silent for a moment longer, watching the light from the candle dance across your face. Then, he opened his mouth to speak, voice hoarse from sleep.
