John (Bucky) Egan, major of the 418th Bomber Squadron group, was waiting on the runway for his companions who had flown over from the United States to the British base. Inside those B-17s were his best friend Gale (Buck) Cleven and many of his friends. He waited, watching as one by one they landed and went outside.
