Patrick. Patrick Zweig. Everyone wants to be him— Art’s pretty sure he wants to be Patrick too. He’s better than him.
Sure, everyone says they’re on the same level. They won their titles together. They were fire and ice (Art found the nickname a little stupid, but it once made Patrick nearly piss himself laughing when they were drunk).
But sometimes Art feels insignificant. Sure, it’s all in his head (mostly), and it’s all him being self-critical and always striving for more in so many different aspects.
Maybe that was why, as he and Patrick won their highest title to date, Art was staring at people’s faces as he and Patrick were presented their crystal-glass trophies. Art was trying to see how people were looking at him— he always had an almost… sexual thing about being observed, which was probably why he could push past his occasional shyness when it came to tennis.
There was just something about being seen by someone.
