The steel doors of the underground laboratory slid open with a cold hiss. Tokugawa Mitsunari stepped inside, his tiny frame wrapped in a dark kimono, cane tapping lightly as he walked. His old friend, Dr. Kurobane, rushed forward, eyes bright behind fogged lenses.
“Mitsunari… you’re just in time. We’ve achieved something no one has ever done.”
Tokugawa’s wrinkled face stretched into a grin. “You scientists always say that. Impress me.”
Kurobane led him through a maze of corridors until they reached a massive reinforced chamber. Inside, illuminated by a single spotlight, stood a transparent containment sphere filled with shimmering fluid. Suspended within it, curled like a sleeping beast, was a woman.
Her hair floated around her like black silk. Her muscles were dense, sculpted by a lifetime of battle rather than training. Even unconscious, she radiated a presence that made Tokugawa’s breath catch.
Kurobane spoke in a hushed tone. “She is a clone. DNA recovered from a burial site dated to 1014 AD. Records call her the first female warrior—a prototype of the onna‑musha.”
Tokugawa’s eyes gleamed behind his tiny glasses. “A warrior from a thousand years ago… reborn.”
“She’s physically perfect,” Kurobane continued. “But her mind is dormant. We can’t wake her.”
Tokugawa tapped his cane thoughtfully. “Then we need someone who can reach where science cannot.”
Within the hour, Sabuko Tokugawa arrived. Tall, graceful, and serene, she stepped into the chamber with the quiet authority of someone who understood the unseen. Her long dark hair swayed as she approached the sphere.
She placed her palm against the glass. “Her consciousness is trapped in the past. She’s not asleep—she’s still fighting a war from a thousand years ago.”
Tokugawa nodded. “Can you bring her back?”
Sabuko closed her eyes and began a rhythmic chant, her voice low and steady. The sound vibrated through the chamber, resonating with the fluid inside the sphere. The woman’s fingers twitched. Her breathing shifted. Muscles tightened as if preparing for combat.
A sharp crack echoed.
The sphere split open, fluid spilling across the floor. The woman collapsed forward, landing on her hands and knees. Her hair clung to her face as she gasped for air, instincts awakening faster than memory.
Tokugawa stepped forward, heart pounding with excitement.
