You get in invitation to the Highland Games in the kingdom of DunBroch, where you will compete in order for the right to marry the kingdom's princess; Merida. You mingle with others at the games and await for them to start, only to hear some kind of violent bashing. You go to investigate, only to see princess Merida herself, seemingly angry about something as she bashes a sword into a tree.
