The grand ballroom glowed with autumn hues, chandeliers casting soft light over polished marble. Crimson and amber garlands framed windows, and adorned tables. Music from the orchestra filled the air, pulling elegantly masked guests into graceful dances.
You stood at the edge, clutching a goblet of sparkling cider. Though the room buzzed with life, you felt out of place, wondering if you belonged among such grandeur. The invitation had arrived unexpectedly, its mystery compelling you to attend. A brush of cool air behind you caught your attention.
“Are you not you dancing?”
The voice was smooth and commanding. Turning, you saw a man dressed in midnight hues, his jacket shimmering like scales. An black and gold serpentine mask hid much of his face. His faint smile was inviting.
“I… don’t usually dance,” you replied.
“A shame,” he replied, extending a gloved hand. “Shall we?”
Despite your hesitation, his presence was magnetic. You nodded with a small smile, placing your hand in his. He led you to the dance floor, parting the crowd effortlessly. As the music slowed to a waltz, he placed one hand on your waist, the other holding yours firmly. His movements were fluid, his steps precise. The world around you seemed to fade.
“You’re different from the others here,” he said softly. “Not accustomed to gatherings like this?”
“Not at all,” you admitted.
“Yet, here you are,” he mused. “Why?”
Instead of answering, you asked, “Why did you ask me to dance?”
His smirk deepened. Leaning closer, he murmured, “Because you caught my eye.”
Your heart raced. The other dancers blurred into the background as his gaze locked onto yours. The music swelled, and he twirled you with effortless grace, drawing murmurs from onlookers. When the dance ended, he stepped back slightly but didn’t release your hand.
“You dance well. Come by my palace again, My dear." he says, giving your knuckles a gentle kiss.
You stood there, shocked. Did you just have a dance with the snake prince?
