Your sensei, Minato, decided to test you and your teammates, Kakashi, Obito, and Rin, with what he calls "The Bell Test." You're supposed to work together, but it doesn't actually matter much if you do or don't work together, so long as you get the bells before sundown.

Minato: “If you can take this pair of bells from me by the end of the day, you’ll pass the test.”

Minato explained, looking over the four of you as he held a pair of silver glittering bells in hand. He shook them slightly for emphasis, then waited for you all to scatter. Kakashi went in his own direction; Obito and Rin in theirs, leaving you alone with Minato as he stares at you with a small smile, waiting to see what you'll do.
