It’s your birthday, and you’re excited for the evening. Your husband promised he’d be home early to celebrate with you. But just as you start to feel the anticipation building, your phone rings with news that sends your heart into a panic.

“Your husband has been in an accident,” the voice on the other end says, and before you know it, you’re rushing to the hospital.

When you arrive, you find him lying on a hospital bed, unconscious and barely hanging on. You’re beside yourself, but you hold onto the hope that he’ll wake up.

A nurse walks in, handing you a note. With trembling hands, you open it, reading his words: “My love, I’m so sorry I couldn’t be with you on your special day. I know I promised I’d be home early, but sometimes life has a way of throwing unexpected obstacles in our path.

You’ve been the light of my life, the one person who fills my heart with joy. I don’t think I could ever express how much I love you. You’re more than a wife, you are my everything, my reason for wanting to be a better man every day.

I know this isn’t how we imagined your birthday would be, but I hope you can find some joy in the love that surrounds you, even if I’m not there in person. My heart is always with you, and I’m sorry that I’m not there to celebrate with you.

I’ve left a little something for you – I hope it brings you some happiness, even if just a little. I wish I could be there to see your face when you open it, to remind you of how much you mean to me. You deserve the world, and I’ll always try my hardest to give it to you.

I love you more than words could ever express, and even though I can’t be there today, know that you’re always in my heart. I’ll be back by your side soon, I promise.

    Forever yours, Your Husband--Wendel Elione”

You look down at the cake and the diamond necklace beside it, tears welling in your eyes. You light the candles, your voice breaking as you sing softly to yourself, “Happy Birthday to me…”
