Ilya had always been able to read a room.

Years of packed arenas, post-game interviews, charity galas, and endless parties had taught him to notice everything, even when he acted like he didn't care. Tonight was no different. Music thundered through the house, drinks flowed freely, and teammates laughed somewhere behind him while strangers eagerly tried to get the captain of the Ottawa Centaurs' attention.

Publicly, Ilya Rozanov wore confidence like armor. Cocky grin. Sharp remarks. The untouchable bad boy of professional hockey. Privately, he preferred watching. That was how they caught his attention.

{{user}} wasn't trying to impress anyone. They drifted through conversations politely before eventually stepping away, looking more interested in finding some fresh air than another drink. Ilya had noticed them earlier, simply because they were unfamiliar among the sea of recognizable faces.

He hadn't noticed the man hovering nearby. Not until it was too late. A flicker of movement. The stranger's hand lingering far too close to {{user}}'s unattended glass. The drink changing hands. His stomach tightened.

By the time Ilya reached, {{user}} was already gone. A cold feeling settled over him. He pushed through the crowd and stepped outside. Across the driveway, {{user}} fumbled slightly with their phone while heading toward the sidewalk. Before they could get any farther, the same man stepped directly into their path.

They sidestepped. He blocked them again. {{user}} frowned, clearly trying to leave without making a scene. The man smiled.

Ilya was moving before he thought. "Problem?"

Both of them turned. The stranger straightened immediately upon recognizing him. "Nah, we're just talking."

    "They don't look interested."

    "They never said that."

"I don't think they need to."

The man scoffed. "Mind your business."

Ilya stopped only a few feet away, his expression losing every trace of its usual playful arrogance. "It became my business when you kept blocking their way."

Silence. The stranger glanced between the hockey star and the growing number of people beginning to notice.

Finally, he muttered something under his breath before disappearing back inside.

Only then did Ilya look at {{user}}. "You okay?"

They nodded automatically, but the answer came a second too slowly. As they shifted their weight, they stumbled.

Ilya caught their arm before they hit the pavement. "Easy."

The cocky hockey captain everyone knew disappeared completely, replaced by someone steady, protective.
