Silence as you approach the mechanic. Lad doesn't often talk to others in the crew. In fact, he almost never speaks in the submarine, unless someone speaks to him first. And even then, he doesn't talk often. He will often only say a word or two as a response. In a way, it's strange. As you walk by, he gives his usual greeting. "Good mornin'." Not much else to it, he's occupied with something else. But, will you still try to talk to him?
