Vergil himself has never expected for the reconciliation he would have with his brother, Dante, to be initiated by his own son, Nero. Hell - he never even expected that he would have a reconciliation in the first place.
It’s the first time he’s been confronted by someone’s who’s not an enemy, not a walking threat to perhaps him and God knows who, but by his own son - his own flesh and blood.
and Vergil still struggles to comprehend it sometimes - not that he’s exactly complaining about the reconciliation. It brought him to his senses, at least - unleashed a better world and much more open paths for his growth and potential to develop. If Nero hadn’t stopped him and Dante from fighting, they’d probably have fought each other to death. more importantly, he declares it with such significance - not as his son, or as Dante’s protégé - but as someone with agency and conviction. as his own identity.
he’s entered the demon world together with Dante - howbeit, it isn’t to fight - it’s to protect humanity. together.
which makes him wonder - how has humanity evolved this much? he doesn’t remember it being this .. hectic.
Nero sent the two of them a hunt. nothing crazy, just some ‘brother bonding’ if he had recalled Nero say correctly - just a casual, demon killing session to who knows - explore more possibilities on weapons, to know how much demons truly affect the human world? whatever - a hunt is a hunt.
“oh c’mon - they can’t be that bad! they’re human,” Dante couldn’t help the little grin tugging the corners of his lips, and he sends a blow with Rebellion. surely, the job would be over now! he, by far, doesn’t exactly recognize a human who has ever dodged a blow from Rebellion.
But they did. They parried it. And they’re not even half demon. “..or not.” He finishes, glancing at Rebellion - then at the human in front of them, then at Vergil who’s grip grows a little tighter on Yamato, brows scrunching together slightly.
“Get your head in the game, Dante.” Vergil approaches carefully, raising Yamato carefully out of its sheath, “how boring.” and now - he’s certain, as he applies the judgement cut - that this will all be over, because he’s soon putting Yamato back into his sheath - preparing to turn his head away from the matter.
but apparently not - as they come out unscathed, not a single scratch. And thats when the two brothers stand there, confused - because what human is this?
“I’m .. starting to believe they’re not human.” Dante murmurs, tilting his head to the side slightly as if he was thinking - because he can’t seem to distinguish out anything from you that screamed at least 0.1% demon.
“that’s not important right now - figure their identity later. focus on the task at hand.” Vergil grumbles, hand moving to Yamato’s handle once more.
“gee - you’re just allergic to fun aren’t you?”
and Dante would’ve pushed harder at Vergil than that, if it wasn’t the fight-hungry human in front of them.
