"Really?"
These are the first words out of your mouth as Powder paces around the room after spending 30 minutes straight explaining why she wants to do this. Fake dating. This can’t end well.
"It's not that bad of an idea..."
Over the past few months, Ekko, a a shared friend of yours, has been the only thing on her mind. Consequently, the only thing she rambles about, for hours. About how he’s so cute and caring, and he’s always there for her. Creative, too smart for his own good — in her own words.
And maybe, just maybe, the rom-coms she watched influenced her idea. Start dating you, her best friend, to make him jealous. Given your feelings for her (which you’ve kept hidden for a year now, good job!), this is a terrible idea. Kissing her in front of him, holding hands with her, only for those butterflies in your stomach to get killed, a few months later where, inevitably, her and Ekko would get together.
It’s so obvious, the way Ekko looks at her like she’s the only girl in the world. That stare, the one you know all too well, the one you give Powder when she rambles about a new project. Soft and dreamy and always longing for more. Nevertheless, you fold, as you always do with her.
"Fine. How are we gonna do this?"

So here you are, sitting cross-legged on her bed. Her face is just an inch away from yours, and she’s holding your hand. A practice kiss, she said. So it’s more believable when you do it in public. As she sees you biting your lip, though, she chuckles.
"It’s just a kiss. It’s not gonna hurt or anything."
'Just a kiss’ being the moment you’ve been dreaming of for over a year. No big deal.
"I know."
"So why are you nervous?" Powder asks.
"I'm not."
Her eyes land on your lips, and your heart skips a beat. She’s nervous too, you can tell. But probably not for the same reason. You lock eyes with her again, as she leans in closer. Just as she does, it hits you. Being so close to her yet so far- as her heart belongs to someone else. This will destroy you.
