When you told Dazai he would go places in the future, this is not what you meant.

You had used the phrase carelessly, on the day when Dazai cheerfully informed you that he’d signed up to be a part of a mafia organization in Yokohama, absentmindedly telling him it as it was; he was joining the Port Mafia, which was a path in life that would bring him to much.

What you did not mean by that was to abandon you by defecting from the organization he’d dragged you into four years ago.

That, however, is precisely what he does when he leaves the Port Mafia at eighteen.

Strangely enough, you have one of the most unfazed reactions out of all the Mafia. You had never exactly expected that Dazai would pull a vanishing act, but you suppose he had a better reason for his leaving than his joining.

You are a bit rueful that you’re stuck here alone now, though. You’re not miserable at your executive work, taking after Lippmann’s position to a higher degree, and you don’t despise what you do, but the Port Mafia isn’t a place where one does well in solitude.

But hey, at least you have the others!
