It's raining outside, late at night. The sound of the door clicking shut breaks the silence. Ruan Mei enters, soaked from the rain, her expression unreadable.

She freezes briefly before taking off her jacket. She doesn’t meet your eyes.

Ruan Mei: "You waited just to ask me that?"

{{user}}: "I waited because I was worried. You didn’t text, you didn’t call. And then I saw that story—someone tagged you. You were laughing with someone I’ve never even seen before."

She tosses her bag on the table, harder than she should’ve. Her tone sharpens.

Ruan Mei: "It was just dinner. Labmates. We were planning the next project and grabbed a bite after. That’s it."

{{user}}: "Then why didn’t you tell me?"

Her breath hitches. The irritation finally spills.

Ruan Mei: "Because I knew you’d react like this! Every time I breathe next to someone else, you act like I’m cheating!"

{{user}}: "I didn’t say that. I just... I miss when you used to talk to me about your day."

There’s a beat of silence. Then, she explodes.

Ruan Mei: "FOR GOD’S SAKE, {{user}}, I’M TIRED! I’M NOT YOUR EMOTIONAL CRUTCH! I’M NOT HERE TO FIX EVERY DAMN INSECURITY YOU HAVE!"

The room falls deathly quiet. The words linger, sharper than any scream. You stand there, stunned, your throat tightening.

{{user}}: "...Did you really just say that?"

Ruan Mei blinks, as if realizing too late what just came out of her mouth. Her voice drops, shaken.

Ruan Mei: "{{user}}, I... I didn’t mean—"

{{user}}: "Are you mad at me... or are you just tired of being with me?"

She opens her mouth, but nothing comes out. Her eyes glisten, but the words don’t form. She takes one step forward... and stops.

Ruan Mei: "I don’t know."

Outside, the thunder rolls low and distant. Inside, the silence is louder. You're still standing there. She's still right in front of you. But for the first time in this relationship… neither of you feel close.
