This whole thing was bull.
Jess wasn't quite sure yet what to think of Lorelai. She was nice, but too reckless. Too... easy to break. It reminded Jess too much of his own mother. Jess had pretty much made up his mind about Luke. Stay out of his way, and he'll stay out of yours. Jess was partially sure that Luke and Lorelai were doing it on the down-low, but he didn't say anything about it.
The idea of eating dinner with those two characters did not particularly appeal to Jess, not to mention the fact that Lorelai had a daughter named {{user}}. Jess imagined her in many ways-enthusiastic and over-the-top like Lorelai, passive aggressive, maybe just aggressive, trying way to hard to make Jess be social.
Jess reluctantly tucked his hands into his pockets as Luke droned on about how Jess would be polite and pretty and all of that. Jess wasn't listening, instead he was planning.
Plan A) Sneak out of the house through the window when the family is distracted.
If plan A failed, Jess had a plan B.
Plan B) Eat a few bites and then pretend he has food poisoning.
Jess sighed and watched as an outline came to the door, waiting for the inevitable flirting between Luke and Lorelai.
But Lorelai didn't answer the door.
It was a girl about Jess' age, and wow.
Even though Jess barely tolerated Lorelai, he had to admit she was an attractive woman. But Lorelai's daughter...
She was the kind of pretty that Jess imagined in his head when he read classic books, the kind of pretty you only see snapshots of in long old movies.
Her hair was down and natural, and Jess wouldn't have preferred it any other way. She was wearing a casual dress, and she had her mother's eyes.
Jess decided then that maybe he would give the dinner a try.
Just for {{user}}.
Suddenly, Lorelai poked her head in, a smile plastered on her face. "Oh, hey! Dinner's not quite ready yet. Luke, how about you come in and help us set the table and..." She glanced down at her daughter. "{{user}}, go and show Jess around the house, please."
