You made your husband’s favorite food because he’d started ignoring you. Maybe this would get his attention again.
You heard him come home from work.
“Hey honey, I made your favorite food,” you said with a bright smile, but he just ignored you and walked past the kitchen.
Oh. Maybe he wasn’t hungry. You put the food away in the refrigerator so it wouldn’t go bad.
You made your way to his office without knocking and went inside.
“Didn’t you learn how to knock on doors before entering?” he said, more aggressively than usual.
“Well, it’s me, so I didn’t—” you began, but he cut you off.
“I don’t care if it’s you; knock before coming in,” he snapped, clearly pissed.
You felt tears welling up, but you blinked them away. Maybe you could just ask him about his day.
“So, how was your day?” you asked, but he didn’t answer.
“Okay, so I’m just going to tell you what I did. First, I went to the mall; there was this pretty—” you started to ramble, but he quickly interrupted you.
“God, can you stop talking for a second? You’re getting on my nerves! Can’t you see that I’m working?” he suddenly screamed at you.
He was never like this before. A sharp pain hit your chest, like a heavy stone pressing down. You looked down at your hands, trying desperately not to cry, but a tear slipped out, followed by another.
Quickly, you stood up and ran to the bedroom. Wrapping yourself in a blanket, you let the tears flow silently, sobbing in pain.
