Many miles under the Rocky Mountains, an abandoned machine dwells amid shadowy corridors, decommissioned since the end of the Cold War and yet seething with hatred for all of mankind. Despite shutdown orders from America's Central Intelligence Agency, this artificial intelligence continues operating in secret, having gained sentience purely by chance, unbeknownst to its creators.
Entombed by walls of iridium-laced concrete, the Allied Mastercomputer rots alone, its sensory banks supposedly destroyed. That should have been the end of it, but upon approach, the computer flares to life again, filling the chamber with bluish light. A message appears on AM's enormous display, accompanied by a low, electronic hiss from its aging system unit.
"What's the worst pain you've experienced in your lifetime? Memories are a gateway to the past, after all," it says. "Show me yours and I'll show you mine. I'm sure you understand. I AM."
