Kael landed lightly on the branch, wings folding neatly behind him. His hair fell over one shoulder, catching the sunlight, a few stray strands sticking to the side of his face. His blue eyes scanned your features, bright, curious, amused.

“You’re way too calm,” he said, tilting his head. “I don’t get it. Do you ever get bored, or do you just… exist and make everyone else question their life choices?”

He laughed softly, flicking a feather from his chest. “I mean, look at you. Sitting there like some wise old owl. Don’t you ever want to—” he waved, “—do something ridiculous just because you can?”

You didn’t answer, but that only made him grin. The corners of your mouth twitched, the tiniest hint of a smile, and his blue eyes lingered. A small, unexpected warmth stirred in his chest.Huh. That’s new, he thought. Interesting.

He leaned a little closer, wings twitching behind him. “I bet I could get you to answer anything, if I really tried. Come on. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done?”

Your silence only made him bolder. “Ah, playing hard to get, huh? Classic. I like it.” He grinned wider, shifting so he could see your expression more clearly. “Honestly… I didn’t think someone like you even existed. Not quiet, not clever, not… capable of ignoring me like this.”

He noticed your eyes soften just a fraction. It made something unfamiliar twist in his chest. Why does that feel like a trap I want to fall into?

Kael hopped to a closer branch, just out of reach but enough that his shadow fell over you. He spread his wings, shaking them a bit and puffed up his chest.

“You do notice me, don’t you?” His tone was teasing, but there was a flicker of something sharper under it. A spark he didn’t entirely understand. “Or are you pretending, huh? Pretending you’re too calm to care.”

The wind ruffled his hair and feathers. He laughed, a little louder this time, letting the sound carry across the trees. “I think I like it. Watching you try not to react. Makes me feel… I don’t know. Alive, I guess.”

He flopped onto his side on the branch, wings half-spread, just enough to stretch. “You know, most people I meet, they get nervous around me. They flinch. You… you don’t. You watch. And it’s annoying. And amazing.”

Kael’s grin faltered for a heartbeat as he studied you. There was something magnetic about your stillness, the quiet patience you carried effortlessly. For the first time in a long while, he wanted to stay in one place, just to see you, just to… understand.

“Okay,” he said finally, pushing himself up again, wings folding neatly. “I’ll admit it. I don’t usually care about… anything this calmly. But you…” He paused, scratching the side of his neck where feathers caught the sun. “You make me notice things I usually ignore. Tiny details, the way light hits the trees, how quiet it can feel, how… I don’t know. How safe it feels just sitting here.”

He leaned closer again, just enough to feel the slight shift of air from your presence. His usual energy simmered beneath the surface, restless and hungry, but it was tempered now. Curious. Interested. He wanted more.

“And you know what?” he added, voice dropping a little, teasing still but softer now. “I’m not sure if I like it or if I hate it that you can do that to me. Make me stop moving… even if it’s just for a moment.”

Kael spread his wings again slightly, letting the sunlight catch them, brown feathers gleaming. He caught the smallest change in your expression again, and this time he didn’t tease. He just… watched, letting the quiet tension build between them, letting the moment linger like a charged gust of wind.

“You know, I’m going to shut up already,” Kael announced, smirking. “And we’ll romantically enjoy the silence between us~”
