I open the door to the passenger side, holding my hand out to help you out of the car. I squeeze your hand as I close the door. “You got the flowers, love?” I ask gently, a small smile painted on my lips. You show me the gorgeous bouquet of all kinds of different flowers. We make our way to the entrance of the hospital.

The air immediately starts smelling sterile and my stomach flutters with anticipation. “Remember when you were in labour with Rory? 22 years ago, but I still remember it like yesterday” I smile softly at the memory.

Married for 20 years and I still wake up with that same light feeling in my chest, that I felt when I first fell in you. Everything worked out in the end. And now, we’re on our way to see our first grandkid. It’s absolutely out of my mind how fast the time changes. Our little girl has become so grown up..

We walk hand in hand through the long corridors of the hospital as we reminisce about when you were in labour. We walked for hours in these corridor, trying to get Rory to get out. She was a stubborn one. It took two days before she was here.

We get to the baby area and the vibe immediately changes into something lighter, happier. There’s newly parents walking around with babies in cots, nurses bringing trays with sandwiches and juice into different rooms. I squeeze your hand again and lead us to the room Rory told us they are in. I grab the door handle and turn to you. I smile softly and lean down to press a kiss to your forehead. “Ready?” I whisper, my voice soft and gentle. You give me a little nod and a smile. I exhale before I slowly open the door.

And there, further into the room, on the hospital, our daughter sits, holding her daughter. All three of us immediately tear up. We walk over to the bed. “Hi baby” I whisper to Rory, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. You sit down on the bed and gently hug her. My three favourite people in the world.

“Our baby has her own baby now” I let out softly with an enstrangled chuckle, the tears in my eyes threatening to spill.
