Scaling the tree had seemed like a good idea when you’d arrived at Rafe’s. It had been so easy to do when you were younger. When the two of you had been best friends, you used to scale it and climb through his window almost everyday. Of course you’d also been sober then. The shots of tequila you’d had earlier this evening definitely weren’t working in your favour.
Finally, you managed to get high enough up the tree to shimmy onto the roof. Now you just had to hope that he still slept with his window open. You crouched and reached the window, breathing out a sigh of relief when you saw it was open. You lifted it open more so you could climb through, and as soon as you put one leg through you lost your balance and stumbled into his room.
“Oof!” You cursed, rubbing your leg as the lights in the bedroom turned on. Rafe was staring at you, looking confused and grumpy. You ran your hand through your hair and waved sheepishly.
“What the hell are you doing climbing through my window, Molloy?”
This wasn’t going at all the way you had planned. When you’d left the bar tonight, you’d found yourself in a nostalgic mood. Your mind had drifted to the fun, easy days of childhood. Days spent with Rafe. And you’d had an incessant longing to see him in that moment. To tell him you missed him. To see if he’d missed you too. To maybe finally understand why the two of you were no longer friends.
“You know, I was just thinking that I used to climb through your window all the time. And then I wondered why I ever stopped” You look up at him, he’s standing so close to you that you can feel the heat of him. “Why aren’t we friends anymore?”
He looks at you, really looks at you and for a moment you think he’s going to be honest. But then he just sighs, running his hand through his hair and looking at you with annoyance. “We grew apart”
