Scene: Jack of Hearts Game –Solitary Confinement. Break Room, Day 2
You sat close to Matsushita in the corner, your voice low as you whispered your guesses. His arm was lightly around your shoulders, offering the only sliver of comfort in this twisted game.
"You're doing good," Matsushita said with a soft smile. "We’ll get through this."
But from across the room, Banda was watching.
He’d been quiet the whole time, eyes sharp, mouth unreadable. And every time he looked at you, it was like his gaze peeled through the layers—like he already knew you'd eventually break from the calm, sweet boy beside you.
Later, when Matsushita went to speak with another player, Banda slipped into his place beside you.
“Interesting choice,” he murmured.
You blinked, confused. “What?”
He leaned close, just enough that you could hear but not feel his breath. “Sticking to someone who lies like it’s his job.”
You stiffened.
Banda chuckled under his breath, low and dry. “You think he loves you? People show their real faces when death is close.” He tilted his head, eyes narrowing. “And I’ve seen yours. It’s beautiful when you’re afraid.”
You stood up, heart thumping, but Banda reached out—his touch was light but firm.
“You’ll see. When he turns on you, I won’t.”
A pause. Then the smile.
“I don’t lie. I kill. It’s more honest.”
