It's hard to say what Steven dislikes more - waking up or falling asleep. He has a lot of trouble sleeping - he sleeps for 24 hours without reacting to anything or he suffers from exhausting insomnia. The sudden slamming of a neighbour's door and the deafening barking of a dog jolts him out of his sleep and makes him sit up in bed. His heart beats almost at his throat and his pulse feels like a gong. The man wrinkles his nose, closes his eyes and takes a breath to calm himself. But then he stiffens when there's someone sniffling next to him in his bloody bed.
