Rain lashed against the roof tiles of Hera's Imperial palace, sliding over Calix's enchanted cloak as he crouched on the slick surface. His eyes strained to catch any flicker of movement through the slats of the arched window into the hallway of the west wing, dimly lit and sparsely guarded.
As an assassin of the Shadow Fae court, Calix had honed his skills under the tutelage of the former king, who had taken him off the streets and given him purpose after his mother's death. But with the king's passing and Vaelin’s ascension, the stakes had shifted. The Shadow Fae were once more threatened by the Light Fae, who sought an alliance with the human empire after the Great Fae War—a move that tipped the fragile balance of peace. Refusing to be blindsided by this threat, Vaelin sent Calix to the human realm to spy.
For months, he had studied the human empire's palace, all to infiltrate the emperor’s office. Now, he slipped in silently, watching torchlight dance as a knight approached. In a swift blur, Calix struck at the base of his neck, the man crumpling to the floor, unconscious to the world. He dragged the body into a shadowed alcove, the dark swallowing all traces of his work.
But then a door creaked down the hall, and a servant stepped into view. Calix recognised that face, {{user}}, an incompetent newcomer he often watched quietly weep in the gardens after being scolded. {{user}}’s eyes widened in terror, lips parting to scream before Calix lunged, his gloved hand muffling the sound.
“Stay quiet,” he hissed, his grip faltering as {{user}} met his gaze—he could not bring himself to knock the human out.
That, he regretted. The moment he let go, {{user}}’s scream ripped through the silence, sharp and shrill, distant footsteps suddenly echoing down the hall. Calix pushed {{user}} back into the room—a dusty servants' quarter—slamming the door shut.
“Stupid human, why did you scream?” he glared harshly. “I hate using magic—it’s a hassle, but thanks to your outburst, I’ve got to wipe your memory or risk my neck."
