Derek’s fingers tapped restlessly against the steering wheel, his eyes flickering over the trees as he made his way up the winding dirt roads leading to Wren’s old family cabin.

Five years. Five years since they’ve spoken or even seen each other. Just thinking about it made his heart ache with the familiar pang of loneliness and anger. He knew he should’ve tried to find her sooner, but he didn’t know what he’d even say. How did he explain everything that happened since he left? Since he even got back?

Stiles looked over at Derek in slight concern at his uncharacteristic anxiousness, but pursed his lips to keep his thoughts to himself.

Derek half hoped Wren wouldn’t even be there. That the cabin would be old and empty and abandoned, but as they pulled up to the drive, two dogs ran out to greet his car, barking wildly. Derek cut the engine and glared out of the windshield as he tried to control his heartbeat.

“Think she will really let us hide out here a few days?” Stiles asked, dubiously.
