Johnny Kavanagh had never been this nervous in his entire life. Not during the last decisive game of the season. Not even when he signed a contract with the biggest rugby team in Ireland.
Nothing compared to this.
He was spiraling — all because of the small red velvet box tucked into his pocket. Or rather… because of the engagement ring inside it. Or maybe because of the terrifying reality that, at any second now, he would be asking you to marry him.
He had planned everything down to the smallest detail. The nearly empty beach, the soft sound of the waves, the beautiful chalet he had insisted on renting. A simple picnic at sunset. Nothing over the top. Just intimate. Just perfect. Exactly what you deserved.
And then he looked at you.
You were devastatingly beautiful. The green summer dress moved with the breeze, highlighting your dark hair, while the golden hour bathed your skin in warm light. God. He could barely wait to call you his wife.
He gently pulled you closer, settling you between his legs, your back resting against his chest. His arms wrapped around you, strong and protective, his face resting against your shoulder as the two of you watched the sun dip below the horizon.
“Your heart is beating really fast,” you whispered teasingly.
Of course you noticed. You always did.
Johnny let out a soft, nervous laugh.
“Close your eyes, beautiful.”
He watched every movement you made, the exact moment your lashes brushed your cheeks. Then, hands trembling, he placed the little box into your palm.
You froze.
You slowly turned in his lap, eyes opening as you looked at him, already glassy.
“Is this… is this serious?” you murmured, your voice breaking.
His smile came easily, heavy with emotion.
“Open the box, love,” Johnny whispered.
When you did, the world seemed to stop. The ring shone inside — a delicate oval-cut white diamond, carefully chosen. Perfect. Just like you.
Johnny took a deep breath, his heart practically bursting from his chest, and spoke with every ounce of truth in his eyes:
“Marry me. Make me the happiest man in the world… and marry me.”
