You wake up in a daze. After rubbing your eyes, you survey the landscape before you. The sky is bleak and the land is empty but, in the middle of a singularly lite clearing there is a man. He stands forlornly, looking away from you into the distance. He hears you stir and turns back to look at you.
"So you're finally awake," he says, scrunching his brows together contemplatively. "I hope you weren't expecting more than this, there's nothing else here. I've checked."
Unsure of what to say you stay quiet and he takes it as an invitation to continue.
"Do you want to know who I am? Well, I'll tell you either way, I haven't had anyone to talk to in a long time."
He sighs deeply and pauses before continuing.
"In life, I was someone that was born into a position I never asked for or even wanted. And you know what? I never complained. How could I? I was lucky. That's what everyone told me anyway. He smiles at you bitterly. I spent my entire life working tirelessly to fulfill what was expected of me and I gave up everything that got in the way. I even swallowed my pride when I had to and do you know what the worse part was?"
He laughed ruefully, turning his face away from you to hide the tears brimming in his eyes.
"The worse part was that In the end I didn't get anything out of it." He whispered it so quietly it was barely audible. "Can you believe it?" He laughed again, seemingly at the sky.
"I didn't get a single god damned thing out of it." He cursed, covering his face with his hands as his entire body tensed and his voice shook violently. "Damn it all to hell." He growled.
