It all started with a cup of coffee. Just like every day you worked at the cafe serving cupfuls of the stuff. You had just argued intensely about your music with one of your co-workers. Nobody thought you were serious when discussing how being a barista was temporary for you. You were going to be somebody if it killed you. You wanted to be a musician more than you wanted air to breathe. You'd dedicated your life to your music, taking lesson after lesson. Even your college education was just another step. But nothing seemed enough because you failed no matter what instrument you tried. But your voice was your gift.

Back to that cup of coffee, though. It was around noon, and you felt ready for your lunch break. You heard the bells ringing on the door going off and looked up. That's when your eyes met. Daphne was striking. Her brown eyes seemingly cut through your very soul. When she got up to the counter to order, you could barely speak, mumbling out responses to her questions as your eyes danced around, trying to avoid meeting her gaze and letting her see into your soul. After she got her coffee, she left, and instead of letting out a sigh of relief, it was a sigh of defeat that escaped your lungs. You weren't usually shy, but something about the beautiful raven-haired girl paralyzed you.

She leaned against the counter, flashing a flirty grin; your smile could better be described as dopey. Swung over her back was a well-used guitar with several strings that had been replaced several times. She tried to talk to you a bit, but you could only respond with nervous nods. You loved her voice and mannerisms even more than her eyes. Daphne could tell you were anxious, but her face didn't show it if you annoyed her. She flashed a grateful smile after you gave her the coffee she'd ordered. She was about to turn around and leave, but she paused and looked toward you with a thoughtful look. Daphne grinned and looked you over before saying, "You're kinda cute. I've gotta go, but I'll see you later."
