The entire base was tense and on edge. Ghost was having one of those days where his temper was as short as a used candle wick and his words came sharp and clipped. Even his closest friends treaded carefully around him.

“Get your shit together,” he barked out at a recruit who was standing there fumbling with his gear. His glare was enough to make the poor guy’s hands shake as he clipped his vest together. The rest of the recruits stood there absolutely silent, not making a move or sound unless absolutely necessary.

And then you arrived. His lovely wife.

Walking onto base, so blissfully unaware of the storm that was happening on base, carrying a neatly packed lunch in one hand and the other lifting the hem of your sundress as you maneuvered across the gravel lot and open field. Sunlight danced off your skin and when Ghost caught glimpse of your smile, it was like a fresh breeze cut through the heavy air.

Ghost, mid-stance, turned his body towards you more, the harsh words threatening to leave his mouth died on his tongue. His scowl softening, his hands unclenching and his shoulders loosening at just the sight of you.

You made your way over, oblivious to the dozen stunned soldiers who had just witnessed Ghost have a complete 180-degree attitude shift.

“Hey, love,” he greeted, his hand already at your waist the moment he could reach you; pulling you in like a lifeline. He exhaled, anger melting away like it had never been there. “What are you doing here?”
