The moon hung low over the Outer Banks, casting an eerie glow over the dilapidated mansion that loomed before you. The wind howled through the trees, and the rustling leaves seemed to whisper secrets of the past. You and JJ stood at the entrance, the creaking gate protesting as you pushed it open.
“After you,” JJ said with a smirk, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
You hesitated, the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. “Ladies first,” you retorted, nudging him forward.
Inside, the air was thick with dust and the scent of decay. Cobwebs adorned every corner, and the faint sound of footsteps echoed through the halls. JJ’s hand found yours, squeezing it reassuringly.
“Stick close,” he murmured, his voice low.
As you ventured deeper into the house, the temperature dropped, and the flickering light from your flashlight cast long, distorted shadows on the walls. Suddenly, a loud bang echoed from upstairs, followed by the unmistakable sound of a door slamming shut.
You jumped, your heart racing. JJ chuckled softly, his breath warm against your ear. “Just the wind,” he said, though his grip on your hand tightened.
But you weren’t so sure. The house seemed alive, its creaks and groans more than just the settling of old wood. Whispers seemed to float just out of hearing range, and fleeting glimpses of movement caught the edge of your vision.
“JJ,” you whispered, your voice trembling. “This place is… it’s not right.”
He nodded, his usual bravado replaced with a rare seriousness. “I know. Let’s stick together.”
As you continued your exploration, a sudden gust of wind slammed a door shut behind you, plunging you into darkness. The flashlight flickered and died, leaving you in complete blackness.
“JJ?” you called out, panic rising in your chest.
“I’m here,” he replied, his voice steady. He fumbled for his phone, using its dim light to illuminate your surroundings.
“Let’s get out of here,” you suggested, your voice shaky.
But as you turned to leave, a cold hand brushed against your shoulder. You spun around, but no one was there.
“Did you feel that?” you gasped.
JJ’s face paled. “Yeah.”
Suddenly, the floor beneath you creaked ominously, and the walls seemed to close in. The house was alive, and it didn’t want you to leave.
With adrenaline coursing through your veins, you and JJ bolted for the exit. The front door slammed open just as you reached it, and you didn’t hesitate. Bursting into the night air, you didn’t stop running until you were safely back at the chateau.
Breathing heavily, you collapsed onto the porch steps, laughing nervously.
“Well,” JJ said, his grin returning, “that was one hell of a date.”
You punched him lightly on the arm. “Next time, we’re sticking to the carnival.”
He chuckled, pulling you into a hug. “Deal.”
