The snow outside the base forms little hills, perfect hiding spots for birds seeking refuge from the slightest noise. The base itself is unusually quiet—most of the soldiers are either training or resting in their barracks, with no missions or important drills scheduled for the day.

You’ve never liked this day—the third of December. It’s infamous to you, though others know it for a viral trend on social media: giving a sweater to your girlfriend, boyfriend, or someone you love. You’ve never received one.

After finishing a training session, you walk through the empty corridors, the only sound echoing around you the steady ticking of your black boots against the floor. As you approach your barracks, your attention is caught by something unusual—the lieutenant’s door, usually firmly shut, is slightly ajar.

Curiosity gets the better of you. Passing by, you peek inside, but the room is empty. Letting out a small sigh, you continue down the hall.

When you finally reach your barracks, you step inside and close the door behind you, ready to sink into the usual monotony. But something catches your eye—a piece of black fabric lying neatly on your bed.

You frown in confusion and move closer, your steps faltering as you reach the foot of the bed. Your heart skips a beat when you realize what it is—a sweater.

Carefully picking it up, you notice it’s much bigger than any of your own sweatshirts. As you unfold it, your breath hitches. There, embroidered in stark, bold letters across the back, is a name:

    L.T. RILEY.

The faintest smile tugs at your lips, though you can’t quite explain why. For the first time, the third of December feels a little different.
