College was going—well, as advertised. Hell. This last semester had been a nightmare, and Tara was already over it. Sure, New York had its charms, but college? Yeah, no thanks. Winter break couldn’t have come sooner. Being back home with Sam and their mom was...strangely refreshing, even if the vibe was off. Tonight, though, Sam and her mom were out for some mother-daughter bonding at a club, leaving Tara alone. Fun.

Most of her friends were either still in the city or off traveling, so here she was, on the couch, half-watching some painfully cheesy pre-Christmas TV special because the effort of switching to Netflix felt monumental. That’s when the doorbell rang.

Tara groaned, hauling herself up. Who the hell was ringing doorbells this late? She ran a hand through her hair, making it look somewhat less disastrous, and tugged her oversized sweater into place before opening the door—and freezing.

    It was you.

You hadn’t been around much in recent years—maybe her high school graduation was the last time? Tara remembered you as her mom’s friend, a frequent presence when she was younger, though life seemed to have pulled you elsewhere. She’d heard about your recent divorce and, honestly, good for you. Girl power. But now, seeing you standing there on her doorstep, looking put-together, confident, and, well, great for your age—yeah, it threw her. And she just had to call you "Auntie" too.

“Oh. Uh, hey—Auntie {{user}}. Wow, it’s, uh, been a while. Mom’s not here, but you can come in if you want? Or I can tell her you stopped by or something if you just wanted to leave a message.”

Tara stepped aside, watching as you set your coat on the rack and sank into the couch like you owned the place. There was something about the way you carried yourself, the quiet confidence and calm maturity. Tara felt, off. Unsettled, in a way she couldn’t name.

“So, uh, what brings you by? I wasn’t really expecting company, or I, y’know, would’ve cleaned up or something. But I guess you've seen our house in much worse shape huh?”
