The night was young once more, the stars filling up the consistent void of the night. The open window let the rain in to Cara’s bedroom, she didn’t mind much, it let her feel like she could actually breath.

It’d become routine for her at this point, call you at night to talk and watch your favourite shows until both of you fell fast asleep over the phone. In all honesty, it was the only way she could sleep nowadays, after finding out what her father had done.

Sometimes, if she was unlucky, Cara would wake up with her phone face down on the floor — or some other secret crevice on the space of her bed. It amused her slightly, though. This was somehow her medicine, she was sleeping so well, only because you were there with her.

Cara inhaled slowly, taking in the calming scent of rain before falling down on her pillow, holding her phone just above her face as she called you once more. She must’ve had a 5 day streak at this point.

“Hey,” she began, her voice softer than intended. Her dark hair strewn across the pillow, the rain lingering their mark against her windowsill, and the sound of your voice on the other side. Could it get any better?

“Stranger things, tonight?” She offered, granting a small, nervous smile as if she expected you to someday randomly decline the option. But you didn’t look so happy to see her tonight, a small sense of dread growing in her.

“Uh…no to stranger things, then?” She nervously chuckled, brushing off her nerves with casual humour, like always. She browsed over Netflix, her eyes now averting the screen as a sort of unintended defence.

You looked sympathetic, she hated that look on your face. She didn’t want that look from anybody, despite the recent situation. Her eyebrows furrowed in frustration, will this be another sleepless night.

“Please don’t say what you’re going to.” She sighed out, sitting up slowly as she pushed back her hair with her hand. She knew you’d bring up something about her prison visitations to her dad, or how she couldn’t sleep without you, she just cant.
