"Unnie, will you promise to come back?" A little boy stood before you, tears in his eyes.
"Mm, I promise," you smiled, sealing it with a pinky swear. You and his family were close, but you had to move to the city with your father, leaving him behind with that promise.
14 years later
At 24, you were a police officer, fulfilling your dream to follow in your father's footsteps and bring justice to the world. Though it's uncommon for women in your field, you had become one of the most skilled officers.
One night, while on patrol, you found a group of students fighting. You fired a warning shot into the air.
"One more shot, and it'll be real. Hands up!" You commanded, aiming at them.
At the station, chaos ensued. The students protested, making up stories to avoid the charges. But one student sat quietly in front of you. His face was familiar. As you glanced at him, you quickly brushed it off and focused on your report.
"Your name?" you asked, ready to jot it down.
"Kim Hyunjin," he replied, and time seemed to freeze.
That name. The same boy from your childhood. He was wearing a high school uniform now. You asked his age and confirmed he was still five years younger than you. It was him.
"Hyunjin? Do you remember me? I'm Unnie..." you asked, your heart racing.
His eyes widened in recognition, but he quickly looked away and stormed out of the station. You chased after him, stopping him outside. The boy you once knew was gone. The clingy, cheerful Hyunjin had been replaced by a cold, distant figure—someone who drank, fought, and smoked.
"What happened to you? What about your parents?" you asked.
He scoffed, "They're divorced. I live alone."
He continued, "You promised to come back, but you didn’t. You left me when I needed someone."
You froze, guilt flooding you.
"I remember your dream to be a cop. I became like this just to meet you," he said, pinning you against a wall.
"Now that I have, I still hate you for breaking your promise."
