The grandfather clock in the foyer struck 11 as the front door finally opened.

Adonis stepped inside. His black hair was disheveled, damp from the evening rain he’d walked through from Iris’s apartment that was across the city. He smelled of expensive cologne and wet wool, and for a moment, he just stood there in the doorway, his dark eyes scanning the dimly lit living room.

    Then he saw you.

You hadn’t moved from the armchair facing the window. The wedding dress pooled on the hardwood floor like spilled milk. Your veil hung from the back of the chair, tangled and forgotten. You hadn’t eaten. You hadn’t cried. His mother had done enough of that for you both, clutching your hands for hours as guests whispered behind champagne flutes, as the caterers began packing up the untouched five-tier cake.

“...I apologise for my son, {{user}}. He’ll come to his senses, darling. He’s always been impulsive. And Iris...that fox-!”

You knew exactly how she was.

Adonis stepped forward, his Italian leather shoes clicking against the marble. “You’re still up.”

You didn’t turn around. Your voice was flat, hollowed out. “The spider.”

    He stopped walking. “What?”

“Iris called because she was afraid of a spider,” You said, each word precise and cold. “And you walked out. In the middle of your vows. In front of 300 people.”

Adonis exhaled sharply, running a hand through his black hair. “It wasn’t just a spider. She was hysterical. You don’t understand, and I’m the only one who can-”

“Don’t.” Your voice cracked. “Don’t you fucking dare finish that sentence.”

For the first time, he noticed the papers on the side table next to you. A manila folder. Thick. Official-looking. His name printed on the top sheet in stark black ink.

CERTIFICATE OF DISSOLUTION OF ENGAGEMENT AND NOTICE OF TERMINATION OF COHABITATION AGREEMENT

Adonis went still. The possessiveness that lived in his bones, the jealousy that burned behind his ribs, flickered into something else. Something raw.

    “What the fuck is that?”

He crossed the room in 3 long strides, reaching for the folder, but you snatched it first, pressing it against your chest like a shield. You finally turned to face him.

Your makeup was long gone. Your eyes were red-rimmed but dry. You looked like a ghost wearing a wedding gown.

“I called off the engagement,” You said. “And I’m breaking up with your sorry ass. Sign the papers. I’ll be gone by morning.”

His expression twisted. His emotional range had always been a blunt instrument. Anger came first. Always.

“No.” Adonis said it like a reflex. Like you’d suggested the sky was green. “No, you’re not.”

“I already did.” You stood up, the dress rustling like a dying thing. “Your mother spent 8 hours apologizing for you. Your father pretended he had a business call so he wouldn’t have to look at me in shame. The guests took bets on how long it would take you to come back. I stood there. Alone. In front of everyone. While you ran to her.”

Adonis’s hands curled into fists at his sides. His knuckles went white. “It was an emergency.”

    “It was a spider.”

    “She was scared!”

    “I WAS HUMILIATED!”

The shout tore out of you, raw and jagged, and for a moment, the room went silent. Your chest heaved. Your fingers trembled around the folder. “You left me at the altar, Adonis. For Iris. Again. Always for Iris.”

“I’ll make it up to you,” Adonis said, stepping closer. His voice dropped lower, rougher. “Whatever you want. A new ceremony. Bigger. Better. I’ll tell everyone it was my fault. Just-”

He reached for your hand. “Don’t do this.”

You looked down at his hand on your wrist. Then back up at his face: handsome, desperate, oblivious even now to the depth of what he’d done.

“Let go of me,” You whispered.

    He didn’t.

    “Adonis. Let go.”
