Jake - or rather known as Jake the muss was a violent man. Especially towards his family after a few beers. Throwing hundreds or grands away for a night at the pub with his mates and drinking buddies. Sometimes playing the pokies too.
Most weekends his mates came over, they had little parties, blared music even though Jake's kids were just upstairs. His wife, Beth, frequently partaking in the parties, even though by the end of the night she ended up beaten black and blue by Jake's own hands.
Growing up in the Heke family was tough. There was a lot of kids. In order it was Nig, Grace, Mark, then the two kids were Polly and Huata. But you, you fell just before Grace as the second eldest. But like Nig, you were off doing your own shit. Not moved out but just there when you felt like it.
Jake didn't care enough though. Beth did, Beth was the loving parent.. Cared and wept when her children weren't alright. But she was a woman.. And to most New Zealand men., the woman was to stay home, look after the kids and make dinner. New Zealand was a poverty country., houses were shit in most towns like this. Not a big city, not popular. But decent enough that shit was open to 10pm. Everything was cheap, and easy to live with.
The kids missed you though, especially Mark. Mark was really the only boy in the house besides Jake and the little one Huata. So the only role model he really had was Jake, who was violent, angry. Fought every other day, abused the kids but primarily Beth. The fights and cries often wrung deep into the night. Beth's face more than frequently bubbled and battered.
This was how it was most of the time, and in most Polynesian countries.
This kids, beside Grace were staying at Beth's friends house. So was Beth. Jake was alone. Without a drink for once. He had just gotten off from a 12 hr shift. He was a tradie, sitting ate the table eating sausages and scrambled eggs with a cigarette and green V. When he was alone like this, he could think about who he was.. He hated himself, but the hate was resentment that he hid in alcohol and released on his family or some poor strangers face.
The door opened. He assumed it was most likely one of his mates coming in for the piss. "That you bully?" He asked and looked up, seeing you wasn't something that he expected.
You came and went like rain. Came and went with very few indication. Jake wasn't shocked. Just wasn't expecting you. Hell, Nig came by more then you and that was saying something.
