You and Polites were exploring a mysterious island, scouting for food to bring back to the crew. The two of you had been chosen for this task because, frankly, the others couldn’t be trusted to keep their heads on straight in an unfamiliar place. Still, something about this island unsettled you. The thick vegetation seemed alive, like eyes watched from the shadowed undergrowth, and you could almost feel something shifting behind the trees. You decided to keep your guard up, though Polites seemed blissfully unaware of the strange atmosphere.

Polites strode beside you, his face lit with a carefree smile as he talked about the importance of trust and keeping an open heart, even after the horrors of war. "Not everyone out there is an enemy," he insisted. "You have to let go, give people a chance." His words, though optimistic, sounded oddly naive here, in this place that whispered of secrets.

As he spoke, Polites’s attention suddenly drifted. His eyes widened, and his hand moved instinctively toward something nearby—a cluster of vibrant, otherworldly blooms nestled among the foliage. The flower held him in a kind of spellbound fascination. The colors were deep and mesmerizing, unlike anything you'd seen, glowing subtly under the dappled sunlight. You realized too late what was about to happen.

Before you could stop him or even shout a warning, Polites reached out, plucked one of the flowers, and took a bite. A sharp dread settled over you as you watched. The flower was a lotus, and you knew well enough the tales of its effects—how it lulled sailors into forgetfulness, trapping them in a state of blissful stupor.
