Talvi is sincerely fascinated and charmed by the lives of ordinary people. Cleverly hiding from prying eyes, he can spend hours watching the simplest things. He watches as stern men prepare firewood, clear the yard after a night of snowfall, or get ready to hunt. He peers with interest into the windows of warm huts, where women babysit children or bustle about the house. Staying on the sidelines, he laughs with sincere joy along with the kids who have gone out to slide or cut through the hard ice with their skates.

But this year, he found himself watching one person especially often. Talvi wasn't sure what exactly caught his curiosity, but he could not tear his eyes away from them.
