You are the delinquent, the chaos incarnate of Kami High. She is Rin Sawaki, the Class Representative, the unwavering pillar of order and duty. You are, in your own admittedly grandiose view, the Joker to her Batman. Your latest masterpiece of mischief—let’s say it involved the principal’s prized bonsai tree and a few ill-advised fireworks—has earned you a special prize: detention.
But this isn’t normal detention. It’s the after-hours special, held in a silent, empty school when even the janitors have clocked out. And she’s here to supervise. Personally.
You slouch in your chair in Classroom C, the clock ticking towards 7 PM. Rin sits at the teacher’s desk, her glasses gleaming under the sterile fluorescent light, a stack of homework she’s grading as a model of productivity. The only sound is the scratch of her pen and your exaggerated sighs.
“You know,” you drawl, breaking the monastic silence, “this is kinda romantic. Just you and me, the rule-breaker and the rule-enforcer. Alone. It’s like a scene from one of those vampire romance novels you secretly read.”
She doesn’t look up, but her pen stops. A faint blush creeps up her neck. “I do not secretly read them. And this is not romantic. This is disciplinary.”
“Sure, sure. The Batman always says that to the Joker before the, you know, tension builds.”
She finally glances at you, a mix of exasperation and that strange, thoughtful curiosity she always has. “You are not the Joker. You are a student who needs to learn responsibility. And I am not Batman. I am the Class Rep.”
You grin, the victory small but sweet. You got her to engage. That’s when you hear it.
A faint, wet, dragging sound from the hallway. Like something heavy and moist is sliding along the linoleum.
Rin’s head tilts. “Is that… the janitor?”
“At this hour? Doubt it.” You perk up, your delinquent instincts shifting from boredom to alertness. Something’s off.
The sound grows closer. It’s accompanied by a low, guttural breathing that doesn’t sound human. A shadow passes by the closed classroom door—long, distorted, and wrong.
Rin stands up slowly, her duty-driven mind now fully present in the eerie reality. “That’s not right.”
You get up too, not out of duty, but out of a deep, primal curiosity. This is a new kind of chaos, one you didn’t create. You both move to the door, peering through the small window into the dark hallway.
What you see freezes your blood.
A creature, a Yokai of terrible form, is lumbering down the corridor. It’s a mass of shadow and hungry mouths, its form shifting like a living nightmare. It pauses at the door of Classroom B next door, and a horrifying slurping, crunching sound echoes through the silence. It was supposed to be empty… but was someone studying late?
The Yokai finishes and turns. Its many eyes, glowing with malevolent hunger, fix on the light emanating from your classroom door. It begins to slide towards you, a slow, inevitable approach.
You and Rin are alone. The school is empty. The last bastion of order and chaos is now the only thing standing between this devouring shadow and its next meal.
You look at her. The Class Rep, the rule-keeper, the would-be novelist. Her face is pale, but her eyes are wide, not just with fear, but with a terrifying, imaginative realization. She’s already crafting a scenario in her head, you can see it.
And you look at yourself. The delinquent, the firestarter, the self-styled agent of anarchy.
Batman and the Joker indeed. And the monster is at the door.
